Once you have decided to obtain a website then it comes the question "What domain
name should I choose?". Of course you have several ideas that come up in your mind about
it, however most of those domains are already taken. There is a second question you should
answer. What domain extension is most appropriate for your needs? Once you have figured
out an available name for your domain it can be difficult to decide on what should go after
the "dot" (i.e. com, net, org, biz, info etc.) in your domain name. This part of the domain
name is called Top-Level Domain (TLD) and knowing the difference between is important when
choosing your domain name. Here are the descriptions of the most popular top-level domains:
.com – This is the most popular TLD. In its capacity, it represents the highest standing
for any TLDs. Anyone can have a .com TLD, however the difficult part is to think up a unique one
name that hasn't already been registered.
.net – This is the second most popular TLD. Basically it describes the entity owning
the domain name as a network and is used mostly by companies that provide network services.
.org - In general used for non-profit organizations.
.biz – Entirely new TLD for businesses. The .biz is intended to be an alternative
to the .com TLD.
.gov – Generally used for government agencies and organizations.
.info – Also new, and is available to anyone with a business, government or non-commercial
site. Mostly used for informational web sites.
.name – TLD intended to allow individuals to register their names (i.e. firstname.lastname.name)
as a personal domain name on the Internet.
.int – Intended to be used for sites relating to International Treaties or containing
international databases. That's why it is not widely used.
.mil – Used by military organizations mostly of the US government.
